"TR" stands for Triumph Roadster. The series consists of 8 models that, from the TR 1 to the TR 6, are a further development of the previous model. Only the TR 7 and 8 were really new concepts, but intended to continue the TR line and are therefore also described in this article.
The TR 4 was a long time coming. Triumph was convinced of the need to replace the TR 3a, but was put off by the high development costs and the launch of production of the new TR. There was also no agreement on the design at management level. In the end, they agreed on a design by Giovanni Michelotti. The old chassis was adopted unchanged, but there were numerous differences:
- The engine capacity had increased drastically.
- The gearbox was fully synchronised.
- The bodywork was completely new and completely in keeping with the style of that decade.
- The doors were equipped with wind-up windows, the comfort had increased considerably and the luggage space was also considerably larger.
The TR4 was built until 1965 in a run of 40,253 units.
