- Fingerprints. Snowflakes. Now this, the Maybach 62. As individually crafted. -
Wilhelm Maybach started Maybach Luftfahrzeug Motorenbau in 1909, which laid its foundation in the engines for Zeppelins. They have not let go of that ‘spirit’, because we have lost two places in our clubhouse, because of that Zeppelin on wheels!
In the early 2000s, Maybach was a dormant brand under the wings of the Daimler branch.
When the demand for luxury ‘land yachts’ increased, a million-dollar bluff arose between the German giants who were interested in this branch of sport. Bentley ended up with Volkswagen and Rolls-Royce with BMW. Mercedes missed the boat, everyone thought. But Mercedes dusted off Maybach and gave her a grand (re)entry.
The first Maybach 62 was loaded in 2002 in a completely glass housing in England on the RMS Queen Elizabeth II (flagship of the Cunard Line), and then transported to New York. From there, it was flown by helicopter to Wall Street’s Regent hotel. Lavishing in style, right?
Our Maybach is a 62. The 62 stands for even more power (thanks also to AMG). We find that ‘62’ quite modest, because it stands for the 5.5 liter V12 twin turbo with 550 HP and 900 NM. Incidentally, that 900 NM is limited, to prevent your rear axle from looking like a whorl after every time you accelerate! It sprints to 100 in 5.5 seconds and is normally limited to 250 kmh. Ours of course not, it just keeps going until just over 300!
When you get in, you notice that the Maybach is not made for the left front, but for the right back. The seats are comparable to those of Qatar when you fly first class and they stretch like a (nearly) full-fledged bed. Do you really need those four climate zones, voice activated TV, 12 cows (!), sun loungers and the stained glass panoramic roof? No. Is it cool? Poh!! An ultimate youngtimer! See you soon?
- The 62 is the fastest and most powerful -chauffeur driven- saloon in the world. -
