The story behind this collectible...
"Thumping good fun" - Yamaha
First introduced in 1976, the Yamaha XT500 is a symbol of durability and off-road capability. The single-cylinder four-stroke engine with the displacement of a big yellow fun cylinder delivers impressive torque and reliable performance. With its kickstarter and lightweight design, the XT500 is designed to excel in the most challenging terrain.
Not surprisingly, the XT dominated the first major African rallies that emerged in the late 1970s. It began with the Paris-Abidjan-Nice rally and then the Paris-Dakar Rally (2X), confirming the superiority of the XT 500. Bengt Åberg competed in the 1977 500cc motocross world championship on a highly modified Yamaha XT500, built in collaboration with former world champions Torsten Hallman and Sten Lundin. Åberg rode the bike to victory in the first round of the 1977 Luxembourg 500cc Grand Prix and finished the season 9th in the final standings of the world championship.
What really sets the Yamaha XT500 apart is its iconic status and reliability. Many XT500 motorcycles produced for decades are still in use, and there is an active community of enthusiasts reviving these classics.
