“TR” stands for Triumph Roadster. The series consists of 8 models which, from the TR 1 to the TR 6, are a further development of the previous model. Only the TR 7 and 8 were truly new concepts, but were intended to continue the TR line and are therefore described in this article.
The TR 4 was a long time coming. At Triumph they were convinced of the need to replace the TR 3a, but they were afraid of the high development costs and the start of production of the new TR. They also could not agree on the design at the board level. Eventually they agreed on a design by Giovanni Michelotti. The old chassis was adopted unchanged, but there were numerous differences:
Engine capacity had increased dramatically.
Gearbox was fully synchronized.
The bodywork was totally new and a completely fit the style of that decade.
The doors were equipped with swing-up windows, the comfort had increased significantly and the luggage space was also considerably larger. The TR4 was built until 1965 in an edition of 40,253.
