What inspired Herr Fatz from Wiesbaden remains a mystery. The fact is that, after almost 25 years of ownership, this beautiful 300SL arrived in the Netherlands with a odometer reading of 4,065 km. The NL owner has, in almost 10 years time, added 35,000 km and maintained the car excellently as evidenced by the 14 present MB-dealer Rüttchen invoices.

From everything you can see that the previous owners have maintained their SL extremely well and meticulously. Only the soft top showed cracks, it was therefore recently replaced for a new one.

The 300SL presented in March 1989 at the Automobile Salon in Geneva was definitely the main attraction. With as a world first the automatic (0.3 sec.) folding roll(over)bar. House designer Bruno Sacco drew the distinctive design. In terms of development, research & development including building a production facility, Das Haus invested 1 billion D Mark in the development and safety of the R129 Baureihe (1989-2001) in the late 1980s.

This made the SL fully compatible with the now almost 65-year-old Mercedes-Benz SL tradition of always bringing a top model equipped with the very latest technology onto the market. The R129 Baureihe was the last 'real' SL to be fitted with a soft-top. Its successors received a steel folding roof.

Driving this 300SL (1989-1993 > about 12,000 built) is a real pleasure; the smooth 190 hp 6 cylinder (SOHC) roars delightfully in the front. Torque is 260 Nm and zero to 100 goes in over 9 seconds if desired. The automatic (even in sport mode) glides smoothly through the 4 available gears, the disc brakes do their job fully satisfactorily.
